In an effort to be a good neighbour, the joint Armstrong and Spallumcheen council agreed with fire Chief Ian Cummings’ request not to charge the OKIB with aid given on a July 30 fire.
Cummings explained that the Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department got dispatched to a grass fire described as “behind the (Spallumcheen )golf course” at Head of the Lake Road and Highway 97. While travelling out to the scene, he noticed a large plume of smoke and immediately requested mutual aid from the BX-Swan Lake department as well as the B.C. Forest Service. When he arrived and found the fire to be on Okanagan Indian Band land, he noted the fire to be three to four acres in size and heading toward the Desert Cove subdivision. A change in the wind direction would have pushed the fire into Spallumcheen territory.
